Condition of Employment: Must be able to lift weights up to 50 lbs (i.e. moving furniture)

 

Education: High School diploma from a recognized educational institution; College diploma in a relevant field would be an asset.

Experience:

● One (1) year working with individuals with substance use or mental health issues.

● One (1) year of front-line experience in social services.

● One (1) year of working in shelter or housing support services.

● Valid driving license and access to a vehicle is required.

Job Description

 

The Housing Support Worker will be part of a team responsible for carrying out the policies and procedures of Daybreak non-profit Housing under the direction of the Operations Manager. They will provide housing and support services to tenants residing in their properties.

 

Main Duties

● Administer agency specific intake and assessment tools, with regards to tenancies i.e. SPDAT, Ottawa Housing Registry, residency agreements.

● Assist new clients in all steps of lease signing and move-in (to include room preparation).

● Establish and maintain supportive relationships with tenants.

● Provide housing and support services to tenants on an as-needed basis.

● Support, through hands-on coaching and practical assistance, daily routines such as house cleaning, meal planning, shopping and laundry that will promote client self sufficiency and independence.

● Facilitate the creation of a supportive environment to encourage tenant involvement in the tenants’ groups, committees, and all community life.

● Organize and monitor activities such as life skills workshops, educational workshops, women's issues, computer skills, volunteering, etc.

● Provide services such as dispute resolution and crisis intervention when needed.

● Support the clients to develop tools/skills such as budgets, lists of meaningful daily activities, personal guest policy, referral to money management services, etc.

● Take proactive steps to prevent a tenant at risk from losing their housing. In accordance with the Landlord Tenant Board/Residential Tenancies Act.

● Refer and link clients to other resources that would further support housing (e.g. mental health and addiction services, physical health supports, homemakers, visiting nurses, community health centres, social workers, hospital staff, etc.).

● Assist clients to access employment, educational and volunteer opportunities that promote self sufficiency, independence, and community integration.

● Ensure that the workplace is a safe, clean, secure, and welcoming place, accessible to all.

● Assist the Office Manager with the financials, newsletters, website, MailChimp etc.

● Maintain accurate records and statistics, document all case notes in files, (i.e. inappropriate behaviours, meetings, eviction follow up, etc.)

● Ensure that appropriate staff (Operations Manager) is informed of any client issues (tenants in crisis, etc.)

● Perform other tasks as needed by the organization. This position requires you to work at all Daybreak Housing locations, in the community and in tenant apartments. This means exposure to sometimes harsh environments; smoke, pests, clutter, verbal abuse and other adverse conditions. Access to a vehicle is required.
